Welcome to Salt Lake City! PDF Print E-mail

Salt Lake City, Utah was founded in the mid 19th century by Brigham Young, who brought his Mormon followers out West to escape persecution in Missouri. Brigham Young and his pioneers built one of the most industrious, innovative societies in the American West. Today, the city remains the spiritual and physical home of the Mormon Church, also known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It is also one of the premier ski towns in the country. In 2002, Salt Lake City played host to the Winter Olympic Games, which were, by any measure, a great success -- not only for the State of Utah, but also for the United States.

Despite its Mormon influence, the city offers a surprisingly diverse suite of activities and events. Sure, most tourists will certainly want to hear a concert performed by the legendary Mormon Tabernacle Choir. But Salt Lake also puts on events like the Greek Festival, the Utah Arts Festival, and the Thyagaraja Music Festival, where you can indulge in an eclectic buffet of music, foods, and dance. If you are a film buff, you surely want to check out the Sundance Film Festival, an annual exhibition of independent theatrical works that attracts the biggest names in the entertainment industry. If you are here in late July, bring the family to Pioneer Day, a one day extravaganza that celebrates the unique westward adventures of the city’s pioneers.
